When we say pure malt is a conversation across cultures, what really mean is...
When we started Woven, our goal was to explore the world of whisky without borders. Over the past five years, that curiosity has led us to makers across the planet — people experimenting with climate, culture and craft in ways that even a decade ago would have seemed unthinkable. Pure Malt is where those journeys meet: our first blended malt whisky, made entirely from single malts sourced from multiple origins.
At its foundation lies Speyside. Five distilleries, married in both Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez casks, give the whisky its depth and structure — honeyed sweetness, dried fruit, soft oak and chocolate. This forms the familiar heart of Pure Malt: a flavour language that every whisky drinker understands.
But from there, things begin to move.
From India comes malt whisky matured under relentless heat — an environment that compresses time, creating whiskies that age two or three times faster than those in Scotland. These casks bring intensity and spice, an almost glowing warmth that feels alive in the glass.
From Taiwan, whiskies shaped by tropical humidity add another dimension: lush, full-bodied fruit, soft vanilla, and a unique balance of elegance and energy. A climate so active that whisky breathes differently — expanding and contracting with the rhythm of the day.
From Australia, we source malt matured in freshly emptied red wine barrels, a signature of modern antipodean whisky making. The result is jammy richness, with notes of summer fruit and toasted oak that brighten the blend and bridge the old and new worlds.
Each component was chosen not for its origin, but its character. Every cask brings its own voice — some bold, some subtle, some with edges, some with warmth. Blended together, they form something complete: a whisky that carries the accents of its parts but speaks fluently as one.
(At present, due to commercial agreements, we can’t disclose the specific names of the distilleries involved — but they represent some of the most forward-thinking whisky makers in the world.)
All of these whiskies eventually find their way to our blending table in Leith. It’s not always straightforward. Sometimes weeks pass waiting for customs clearance or lost samples. When the packages finally arrive, they’ve travelled halfway across the world, processed through countless hands. The air inside the studio changes when they’re opened — unfamiliar scents of heat and wood and newspaper ink in unreadable languages. Even the packing materials carry a sense of place. It’s a reminder that what we’re doing couldn’t have existed a generation ago.
The blending itself happens quietly, over days. Beakers, pipettes, notebooks — a conversation in liquid form. Ratios shift, flavours evolve, and somewhere between chaos and balance, something new emerges.
For us, Pure Malt is at once a throwback to the early days of blending, but our re-imaging of it at a global level is a signal. The world of malt whisky is changing, becoming more open, connected and collaborative than ever before. We want Pure Malt to be a gateway into that world. A whisky that celebrates difference, rewards curiosity, and invites drinkers to discover what’s possible when flavour, not origin, leads the way.
